Our annual Careers in Sport Symposium is slowly — yet surely — approaching (Saturday, October 12th). Leading up to the big show, we will highlight a few of our alumni/panelists so you can learn more about their respective, wide-ranging experiences. Today, get to know Kyle Johnson.
Where you’re from:
Westchester and Rockland Counties (New York)
Major/minor(s) at IC:
Major: Sport Management / Minor: Marketing
Best IC memories:
Being able to carve my own path, which allowed me to get a variety of experiences; from playing baseball to serving on the board of trustees to being a DJ on WICB — there are a lot of great memories and experiences that I have from my time at IC.
Current professional position/title:
Group Director, Multicultural Marketing (Octagon)
How you got there:
Started as an intern, worked my way up the ladder. I worked in various divisions within the agency and with numerous corporate brands and marketing programs. Working in different areas allowed me to get a better grasp of the agency as a whole and our various capabilities, which allows me to be a flexible asset for the company and the various corporate brands I have worked with.
Most valuable skill/trait:
Critical thinking skills — helped by all of those Sports Studies classes. Planning and creativity — helped by those team projects/assignments you get as an undergrad. Leadership — helped by the education you get at IC in and out of the classroom.
Best piece of personal advice to fellow IC students:
Work on securing internships while you are in school. Get experiences in the industry now, work at different places and get different experiences — it will help your resume grow and help you find out what you like and don’t like in the business.
