Here are the favorites to win it all in Sochi:

Throughout all bobsled and skeleton disciplines, there is no athlete who has dominated more since Vancouver than Latvia’s Martins Dukurs. Whether it was the overall World Cup, the European Championships or individual races, Martins Dukurs has managed to win almost anything a Skeleton athlete can win. The only thing he is missing at this point in his career is an Olympic gold medal. In Vancouver he came in second behind local hero Jon Montgomery and Sochi 2014 might be his last chance to add the last missing piece to his career. It will be interesting to see how Dukurs deals with this pressure, but his recent results have shown that he is capable of racing fast on the Olympic track, winning the World Cup race in 2013 . . .

. . . and so begins Max Rottenecker’s piece — “Men’s Skeleton Medal Favorites” — on the USA Bobsled and Skeleton Federation official site. Max, a first-year Sport Media major, wrote the piece while interning with the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation marketing and communications department.

By Chris Lotsbom ’13

Hi Everyone! Well the clock just hit midnight and I need to be up around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, so I’m keeping this post somewhat brief. Instead of writing out my day, I figured I’d tell it through a few highlights and pictures I took. Enjoy!

• First things first, the article I wrote yesterday on Olympic silver medalist Dejen Gebremeskel was published early this morning.

• On Saturday morning, the traditional Champions Breakfast was held in Boston. This event gathers past Boston Marathon winners and honors those celebrating anniversary years. I estimated about 20 former champions in the room; for a history geek like me, it is inspiring to talk to and listen to the stories all of the athletes have to tell. Pictured to the left is Joan Benoit Samuelson (two-time Boston champion and Olympic Gold medalist at the first ever Olympic Women’s Marathon) and Greg Meyer, the last American male to win Boston.

• As is tradition, the champions from last year’s marathon were awarded their bib numbers at the breakfast. Here, Wesley Korir, Sharon Cherop, and Shirley Reilly (USA Paralympian) hold their bibs up. Following the breakfast, I wrote up a story on Cherop, who is confident heading into Monday’s race.

• On Saturday, I also wrote a piece on Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, the 2010 Boston Marathon champion. Ironically, he shares his first and last name with four-time Boston winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, also from Kenya (the two are not related). In my article, he discusses how the famed name the two share motivates him two win more titles in Boston.

• Before heading home during the afternoon, I stopped by the finish line, which was nearly finished being set up. Every year I traditionally get a picture with the finish; I can’t wait until I cross the line following my first Boston Marathon — hopefully next April!

• After briefly going home to Walpole, I returned to the city and attended two running celebrations with my Race Results Weekly editor and publisher, David Monti. Runner’s World and Global Athletics & Marketing (an athlete management/agent company) hosted these events, where people who work in the industry can get together, share stories and see familiar faces. It was nice catching up with a number of managers and race organizers who I hadn’t seen in a few months.

• Following the gatherings, I was walking by the Boston Marathon finish line when I saw some of my New Balance co-workers getting ready for their “Midnight Run.” New Balance has created a very unique marketing campaign around this year’s race, revolving around Paul Revere, Boston’s relevance in American history, and the Freedom Trail. New Balance unveiled a limited edition 890 Boston shoe shortly before the race, complete with a map of the Freedom Trail and lanterns — representing the famous “One if by land, Two if by sea” signal Revere used to warn that the British were coming. They also have large advertisements and experiential stores throughout the city that emphasize their marketing campaign to runners.

• One fun event that involved the Boston theme was a “Midnight Run” through the city, a play off of Revere’s famed Midnight Ride. At 11:00 p.m., nearly 100 runners gathered in front of the Copley Square New Balance store, as actors dressed up in patriot garb held lanterns and one man played revolutionary music from a flute (of course, they were all sporting the cool 890 Boston Edition shoes!). The run was a fun way for athletes to celebrate marathon weekend and spend time with one another; runners were also treated to complementary free giveaways.

• In my opinion (no NB bias, I promise), New Balance has done an extraordinary job of creative and guerilla marketing surrounding the event. Though they are not the official apparel sponsor of the Boston Marathon, they have a clear brand presence throughout the city (more about this in tomorrow’s post). Talking with the Boston Globe’s Shira Springer before the run, we both agreed that the New Balance angle taken towards this year’s race was really special and fun for both Bostonians and runners traveling to the city to race.

Time for bed now. In the morning I will be on the lead vehicle for the B.A.A. 5-K, sending splits and race data to the announcers back in Copley Square. Following that, I’ll watch the B.A.A. Mile races, and then write a race recap. Lots of fun still to come at Marathon Weekend 2013!

P.S. Make sure to follow me at @ChrisLotsbom on Twitter for weekend updates (and follow @nbrunning for my New Balance tweets!).
